The Design of Everyday Things Revised Expanded Book Download

Even the smartest among us can feel inept as we fail to figure out which light switch or oven burner to turn on, or whether to push, pull, or slide a door. The fault, argues this ingenious—even liberating—book, lies not in ourselves, but in product design that ignores the needs of users and the principles of cognitive psychology. The problems range from ambiguous and hidden controls to arbitrary relationships between controls and functions, coupled with a lack of feedback or other assistance and unreasonable demands on memorization. The Design of Everyday Things shows that good, usable design is possible. The rules are simple: make things visible, exploit natural relationships that couple function and control, and make intelligent use of constraints. The goal: guide the user effortlessly to the right action on the right control at the right time.

In this entertaining and insightful analysis, cognitive scientist Don Norman hails excellence of design as the most important key to regaining the competitive edge in influencing consumer behavior. Now fully expanded and updated, with a new introduction by the author, The Design of Everyday Things is a powerful primer on how—and why—some products satisfy customers while others only frustrate them.

Black White a Bit in Between Timeless Book Review

Download Black and White (and a Bit in Between): Timeless Interiors, Dramatic Accents, and Stylish Collections book online now. You also can read books, comics and magazine. Get online Black White a Bit in today.

Black and white décor is at once dramatic and understated, modern and classic, apparent in the work of iconic designers such as Dorothy Draper and Madeleine Castaing but just as present in design today. And the inspiration is all around us—from nature (a zebra’s stripes, tree trunks rising from drifts of snow) to old Hollywood movies and fashion to black-and-white photography and patterns we encounter in our everyday lives (crossword puzzles and the pages of our favorite novels).

In Black and White (and a Bit in Between), acclaimed interior designer Celerie Kemble trades in her signature vivid palette for this iconic aesthetic, highlighting the black and white work of design stars and peers, including Bunny Williams, Thomas O’Brien, Mary McDonald, Victoria Hagan, Mark Hampton, Delphine Krakoff, Brad Ford, Philip Gorrivan, Carrier and Co., and Miles Redd, and welcoming you into more than 100 spaces in every imaginable aesthetic. Woven throughout are her witty observations and expert advice on choosing the best paints and finishes, adding patterns and accessories, building an entire room scheme based on inspiration found in nature, collecting black and white objects, and even choosing the perfect accent colors.

With more than 350 gorgeous color photographs, this is a vividly photographed celebration of a timeless scheme, infused with inspirational tips, glimpses into showstopping homes, and proof that a limited palette is anything but.

Suzanne Kasler is known for her classically inspired rooms, pretty palettes, and comfortable spaces. She brings Southern charm, European sensibility, and a respect for architectural details to her interiors. Her neutral palette, spiced with hits of color, creates warm spaces that are elegant yet inviting. Inspired by fashion, Kasler uses a scarf as a throw, adds grosgrain or satin banding to the bottom of a chair cover, accents draperies with Chanel-like piped borders, or embellishes a bed frame with delicate handpainted patterns. It is these exquisite haute couture details that drive her design aesthetic. Kasler’s mélange of antiques, midcentury pieces, and modern furniture makes her layered interiors attractive and livable. Lavishly illustrated, this beautiful volume showcases a range of Kasler’s projects, from a luxurious Georgian mansion in Atlanta’s Buckhead to a sophisticated farmhouse in Tennessee and a beach house in Watersound, Florida. Offering a wealth of original design ideas that are refreshing and full of verve, Timeless Style is a welcome addition to any library of interior design books.

Fresh perspectives on how good design can create stylish yet ecologically sound living spaces in small-scale homes. Anyone who has faced the challenges of limited living space will find inspiration in this survey of the latest trends in environmentally sensitive, small-scale residential designs. More than fifty residential spaces are profiled—from woodsy houses and repurposed barns to cool apartments and urban lofts—both inside and out. Most of the projects were designed by up-and-coming architects, and each design proves that small-scale efficiency as well as beautiful, thoughtful design can overcome the apparent constraints of a small setting. Environmental impact is a growing concern, so each project was chosen because of its ecological sensitivity. Each case history describes the challenges confronting the designer and the solutions. Creating color schemes to enhance the feeling of openness, taking advantage of high ceilings to make multiple levels, and using collapsible furniture and sliding doors to maximize space are some of the design solutions that can be applied in any situation. Filled with beautiful color photographs and helpful floorplans, this book is a remarkable showcase of how good design can transform any small space into a comfortable, modern—and environmentally sensitive—home.

From the Editors & Experts: Decorating Tips

Inspiration

Editors' Favorites
Use the palette of a striped rug to inspire your choice of room accents and furnishings.

The back of a fabric, curtain, comforter, or area rug is sometimes more interesting—and toned down—than the front. If no telltale signs like hems will show, go ahead and flip it.

Look to nature for perfect color combinations—the landscape, flowers, and vegetables. Animal coats are always perfectly hued. You could do a living room around your calico cat’s coloring!
—Elaine Griffin

I love white walls and neutral furnishings with pops of colorful accessories and accent pieces.
—Annette Joseph

Swatching

Editors' Favorite
Consider how much light a room gets before picking colors. South-facing rooms get more sunlight, so use cool colors such as blues and greens, to soothe the room. North-facing rooms beg for red or yellow tones to warm things up.

Looking at a fabric or paint swatch six inches from your eye is different than seeing it in a room. If it’s going on a horizontal surface, look at the swatch horizontally. Or drape it over a chair. Step back six feet and look at it from a distance.
—Janie Hirsch, Interior Designer

Always do paint test swatches with two to three coats first to make sure you love a color.
—Elaine Griffin, Interior Designer

Grouping

Editors' Favorites
Break up a room of matchy-matchy wood furniture with one painted piece. It doesn't have to be a bold color. Or try black. It balances nicely with natural wood.

Buy vases, pitchers, or decorative boxes in shades of one color and group them to add an easy, impactful pop of color in a room.

Corral a stack of books and the remotes in a colorful tray to create an eye-catching decorative display on a coffee table.
—Grant K. Gibson

How is a book designed? What do book designers think about as they turn mansucripts into printed books? In this volume the book designer Richard Hendel and other book designers discuss their approaches and working methods. They consider the problems posed by a wide range of projects - selection of book's size and shape, choice of typeface for text and display, arrangement of type on the page, and determination of typographic details for all parts of the book within manufacturing and buget limitations. As omnipresent as books are, few readers are aware of the "invisible" craft of book designing. The task of a book designer faces is different from that faced by other designers. The challenge, says Hendel isn't to create something different or pretty or clever but to discover how best to serve the author's words. Hendel does not epouse a single philosophy of design or a set of instructions; he shows that there are many ways to design a book. In detailed descriptions of the creative process, Hendel and the eight other designers show how they achieve the most effective visual presentation of words, offering many examples to illustrate their choices.

The Solar House Passive Heating Cooling Book Review

Download The Solar House: Passive Heating and Cooling book online now. You also can read books, comics and magazine. Get online The Solar House Passive Heating today.

Passive solar heating and passive cooling—approaches known as natural conditioning—provide comfort throughout the year by reducing, or eliminating, the need for fossil fuel. Yet while heat from sunlight and ventilation from breezes is free for the taking, few modern architects or builders really understand the principles involved.

Now Dan Chiras, author of the popular book The Natural House, brings those principles up to date for a new generation of solar enthusiasts.

The techniques required to heat and cool a building passively have been used for thousands of years. Early societies such as the Native American Anasazis and the ancient Greeks perfected designs that effectively exploited these natural processes. The Greeks considered anyone who didn't use passive solar to heat a home to be a barbarian!

In the United States, passive solar architecture experienced a major resurgence of interest in the 1970s in response to crippling oil embargoes. With grand enthusiasm but with scant knowledge (and sometimes little common sense), architects and builders created a wide variety of solar homes. Some worked pretty well, but looked more like laboratories than houses. Others performed poorly, overheating in the summer because of excessive or misplaced windows and skylights, and growing chilly in the colder months because of insufficient thermal mass and insulation and poor siting.

In The Solar House, Dan Chiras sets the record straight on the vast potential for passive heating and cooling. Acknowledging the good intentions of misguided solar designers in the past, he highlights certain egregious—and entirely avoidable—errors. More importantly, Chiras explains in methodical detail how today's home builders can succeed with solar designs.

Now that energy efficiency measures including higher levels of insulation and multi-layered glazing have become standard, it is easier than ever before to create a comfortable and affordable passive solar house that will provide year-round comfort in any climate.

Moreover, since modern building materials and airtight construction methods sometimes result in air-quality and even toxicity problems, Chiras explains state-of-the-art ventilation and filtering techniques that complement the ancient solar strategies of thermal mass and daylighting. Chiras also explains the new diagnostic aids available in printed worksheet or software formats, allowing readers to generate their own design schemes.
